Tulsa Nationals: Competitive Soccer 101

There are many competitive clubs to choose from, that is why at Tulsa Nationals we take your trust in us to “educate” your child in the game of soccer seriously, while at the same time making it a fun, child-centered experience. We feel that the best way to make an educated decision about the right competitive soccer team for your child is to contact our coaches and arrange to come out to a practice to meet the team and the coach. Do your homework; check out all available options so you can make the best informed decision for your child.

Competitive soccer clubs in Oklahoma are governed by Green Country Soccer Association, (GCSA under the auspices of the Oklahoma State Soccer Association) There are 12 competitive clubs in our area that are members of Green Country. Players are not eligible to play competitive until they reach the Under 11 age bracket. A finite number of teams are formed by age with a minimum of 14 players per team and a maximum of 18 players per team, as designated in the GCSA Bylaws. Below is a list of the most frequently asked questions and answers that are specific to our own competitive club Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club.

When are tryouts?
U11-U14 June 26, 2010
U15-U19 June 27, 2010

Where are tryouts?

Union Soccer Club Fields & Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club
9726 East 42nd Street
Suite 235
Tulsa, Oklahoma 74145
918-665-9339

What time are tryouts?
See
www.tulsanationals.org    or www.gcsoccer.com

What if I am on vacation during the tryout dates listed?
Call the coach listed on the GSCA tryout list or on our website.

How many spots are available?
GCSA dictates there will be 14-18 players per team

What should I bring to tryouts?
The usual: shin guards, soccer shoes, soccer ball, and water bottle

What should I expect when I get there?
Sessions usually last 1to 1 1/2 hours. Players will participate in drills as a group and finish with some type of scrimmage. Tryouts are a lot like going to practice.

  What happens after the tryout?
Before you leave the field, each player should either be:

1) Invited to join the team
2) Asked to return for further evaluation
3) Constructively told they do not fit the player profile that club is looking for

I was asked to join the team but I want to tryout for another club also-what should I do?
Unless you have specifically been told that the offer is good for a certain time period, you are not guaranteed that spot after you leave the field. This is why it is so important to do your club research before tryouts begin. It is best to narrow down your choices to 1-2 clubs that you think would be a good fit for your family and then prioritize them as to 1st and 2nd choice.

What if I sign up and change my mind later?
When you sign the contract and give a club your check you are signing a one-year contract with that club. You cannot transfer between competitive clubs until the spring season. In order to transfer in the spring, you must go through Green Country’s transfer procedures; you must be current on your financial obligations at your original club and the new club must have a place for you on a team.

What is the club's reputation & history of success?
Tulsa Nationals is one of the most successful clubs in Oklahoma since it was founded in 1995. The club is recognized nationally & locally as one of the top clubs in OK.

What kind of team successes has the club had?
Tulsa Nationals had multiple state champions and innumerable tournament titles since 1995, with many teams playing in the OPL League and consistently has teams advance in State Cup every year. In addition, a very large percentage of our graduating seniors receive college scholarship to play collegiate soccer. Tulsa Nationals also provides its own in-house college scholarship program to graduating seniors who apply and meet certain criteria.

What kind of experience and credibility does the club’s Director of Coaching have?   How does this compare to other clubs?
Check out the playing and coaching credentials of the different Director’s of Coaching; Victor Moreland was a top soccer professional, is a hands-on Director of Coaching, and still a competitive coach of three Tulsa Nationals teams.

Which club has the best coaches, and what makes them successful?
Tulsa Nationals has one of the best and strongest coaching staff in the region, with all of our coaches having extensive playing & coaching backgrounds. This experience coupled with coaches who instill in their team’s integrity, sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, and the highest quality soccer instruction makes Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club the perfect fit for most competitive soccer players!

What is the Commitment Letter that you sign?
This Green Country form is the official form that binds you to a team and club for an entire seasonal year.   Be sure you are ready to commit before signing that document.

What is the cost of team expenses?
Monthly team dues for 2007 are 60.00/mo. this is an average rate, most competitive soccer clubs in the area are 50.00-75.00 per mo. There are also the usual annual competitive team registration fees (Nationals, UCS, & GCSA) upon being asked to sign with any competitive team after tryouts.   There are some additional nominal team expenses for tournament fees, field rentals, equipment, etc. throughout the year.

Website and other communication tools?
Tulsa Nationals has developed this new website. All our teams also have hotlines to make it convenient to update parents and players on activities as needed.

How much travel is involved?
Depending on the development level of the team and the coach’s plan of action a few tournaments per year are usually average for most teams
