Barry Wallace

Barry Wallace lost his battle with cancer on October 17, 2006.

Barry played professional soccer for 15 years some of that time with Victor on the Tulsa Roughnecks. His professional days saw him named four times to the NASL (the first major professional outdoor soccer league that included such soccer greats as Pele, Cruyff, Beckenbaurer, Best, and Gordy Hill) All Star Team while he played for Tulsa (1980-1984) and Minnesota (1984).

When the NASL folded in the 1980's Barry migrated to the MISL playing for the Wichita Wings and the Kansas City Comets.

Barry began coaching youth soccer when his youngest daughter Sophie began playing as a four year old.   He coached her recreational team to five League championships, in the process working with 26 different girls.   Like many recreational teams, the roster was in a constant state of flux.   Each new season brought virtually a new team; however, the constants were success and a passion to play the game.

Three years ago Barry, along with Doug Miller, moved the core of the girls they coached in recreational play to competitive soccer and joined the Kansas City Attack Soccer Club now the Kansas City United Soccer Club.   From the beginning the two teams they formed have been among the most successful in the City and State.

Barry's work with the Club and the Community was not confined to these two teams.   He has been an active member of the coaching staff working in Youth Soccer Academy in Kansas City, Mo.   Kansas City United works with other leagues and Clubs in offering training.

Among these is a program with Johnson County Parks and Recreation, where coaches from Kansas CIty United present coaching seminars to the recreational coaches involved with Johnson County and offer open training to their players.   Barry has been actively involved in this program.   This weekly program was entirely voluntary and Barry offered his time to over 50 recreational coaches as a community service.

In early September, 2006, Barry learned he had terminal cancer.   In less than two months he went from appearing in excellent shape to being in constant pain, unable to eat and barely able to walk.   There were days when he could barely move or talk and he was hospitlaized on and off for three weeks in the last month and a half.   Despite this Barry attended every practice for his two teams.   For the last two weeks he needed to be carried from the parking lot to the field.   He could only sit at times and barely speak, but he lived for his girls and the game.  He never asked for sympathy, only that the girls play with purpose and passion for the game he loves.

Barry passed on this evening leaving his wife Krisiti, son Daniel (Nationals 90 Boys) and daughter, Sophie.  I cannot describe how he will be missed.  Please pray for his family.

Around here we just lost a very dear friend but we are richer for experiencing his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made for his daughter’s college fund. Address checks to: In Memory of Barry Wallace, Premier Bank, 15301 W 87th Street Parkway, Lenexa, KS 66219.
